The Future Eyes at Banter

January 29, 2013 By stevehorn
The Future Eyes Band
The Future Eyes Band

The Future Eyes Band

The Future Eyes plays at Banter Friday, February 1 at 8pm.

“The Future Eyes were formed in 2011 as four friends came together to put a live sound to the extensive catalog of Denton based singer/songwriter Kelbe Schrank (pronounced, “shronk”), including two previous self-produced albums. The result has been an entirely new true collaborative effort, with Schrank still the primary songwriter, but with new found energy and a dynamic genre-bending sound; an amalgam of indie rock and folk with veins of blues and funk streaking through. With the bold beats and rich harmonies of James Grisham, evocative bass lines of John Oliviera and soaring guitar crescendos of Jason Cook, The Future Eyes leave contrails across the minds of listeners.”

Acoustic Distortion with Steve Jackson & Thad Bonduris

April 7, 2012 By stevehorn
acoustic-distortion

It’s Springtime in Denton, the night before Easter and Banter Bistro off the Square basks in the sweet sounds of Acoustic Distortion. A late night crowd of fans, friends and family gather to listen to the creative output of a handful of well-seasoned musicians, comfortable in their places and happy to share with their listeners.

Acoustic Distortion is the name of the band headed by singer-songwriter, Steve Jackson. The band features a night of original tunes from Steve’s own pen, supported on lead guitar by Thad Bonduris, with Tyler McCarthy on bass and Pete Pravettoni on percussion.  These musicians know each other as well as the instruments they have mastered. Their music fits together like a carefully crafted vessel sailing the smooth and sultry swells of a calm sea under the studded night sky. That is what a night in Denton can bring with musicians that abound and talent that has aged gracefully over time, not in a hurry to finish, always growing in sophistication and maturity.

Jeffrey Barnes' implements of non-restraint, bass sax, soprano sax, and 20 oz Guinness.

Dixieland Jazz in North Texas, brought to you by Mr Joe (Pinson) and a corp of veterans of the Southern tradition usually associated with New Orleans.  On a balmy February evening such as tonight, that is just where you might imagine you were if you were sitting in the crowd at Banter Bistro just off the square in Denton, Texas.

Tonight, Mr Joe is playing his trombone and singing, assisted by long time partner in crime “Captain” Dave Hume on trumpet, Jeffrey Barnes on clarinet and soprano and bass saxophones, and Lee Schloss on tenor sax.  Backing them up with rhythm and harmony are George Merritt on banjo, Bach Norwood on bass, and Steve Prouty on drums.  All together they make for a sweltering February night of Dixieland Jazz with all time favorites such as After You’re Gone, I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, All of Me, Tin Roof Blues and many, many more.

Bluegrass at Banter – February 4

February 4, 2012 By stevehorn
Up the Creek

Up the Creek

Saturday night in Texas brings tunes to Banter from the American heartland. Tonight, a new bluegrass band staffed by not-so-new veterans of the bluegrass scene in Denton.  Up the Creek is made up of Ray Williams on mandolin, Gary Washmon on fiddle, Jack Ryan on guitar and Matt Riley on bass.  These able musicians play with ease that comes from years of immersion in the folk traditions on which Bluegrass was built.  They play great classics such as Over the Waterfall,  Jarusalem Ridge (one of Bill Monroe’s most noteworthy namesakes), Angeline the Baker,  Summertime (ala Texas Swing), Paint it Black (??? a favorite Rolling Stones polka!), waltzes, polkas, all pleasing the toe-tapping crowd and showing tribute to our folk heritages.
