Saturday night in Texas brings tunes to Banter from the American heartland. Tonight, a new bluegrass band staffed by not-so-new veterans of the bluegrass scene in Denton. Up the Creek is made up of Ray Williams on mandolin, Gary Washmon on fiddle, Jack Ryan on guitar and Matt Riley on bass. These able musicians play with ease that comes from years of immersion in the folk traditions on which Bluegrass was built. They play great classics such as Over the Waterfall, Jarusalem Ridge (one of Bill Monroe’s most noteworthy namesakes), Angeline the Baker, Summertime (ala Texas Swing), Paint it Black (??? a favorite Rolling Stones polka!), waltzes, polkas, all pleasing the toe-tapping crowd and showing tribute to our folk heritages.
