Andy LaViolette arranged for another evening of delight for Banter jazz lovers. Tonights line-up was a quintet featuring Kevin Swaim on trumpet and flugelhorn, Carl Lundgren on trombone, Chris Reardon on tenor sax, with Austin Byrd on keyboard, Preston Haining on bass and Doran Ritz on drums. The tunes were largely form the 40’s and 50’s featuring all time greats such as Jerome Kern’s “All the Things You Are” and Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone”. Also included were original compositions from musicians from the UNT Jazz Studies program.
The two hour set started off with Kevin Swaim leading off with rhythm entering gradually while the music kicked off. Kevin incants the tune followed by Carl Lundgren joining in for his solo. This building persisted as the evening progressed, adding Chris Reardon on tenor after the first two or three tunes. Austin Byrd worked wonders on the keys supporting, then soloing and returning to rhythm to offer a commanding swell and retreat while in all the band’s energy expanded throughout the night.
Jazz at Banter is always heard on Saturday nights from 6 to 8 pm.
